Racist and fascist protesters attacked accommodations in Tamworth, Rotherham, Bristol, Middlesbrough, and Southport, setting fires where asylum seekers are believed to be staying. Violent riots erupted across the UK. According to a report from the Mirror, taxis transporting NHS nurses in Sunderland were attacked by protesters throwing rocks. Filipino nurses en route to emergency hospital shifts were caught in chaos as rioters set a police station ablaze.
These riots began after a tragic knife crime in Southport claimed the lives of three children. A disinformation campaign followed, infusing Islamophobic, racist, and anti-migrant sentiments by falsely identifying the suspect and justifying violent actions against vulnerable communities.
For years, migrants, refugees, and ethnic minorities have suffered various forms of violence stemming from institutional racism in the UK. This includes workplace discrimination, labour exploitation, domestic violence, modern slavery, and even death—an echo of a barbaric culture rooted in the days of enslavement. Migrants and refugees are often subjected to forced migration due to historical violent colonisation and foreign domination of developing countries, such as the Philippines.
We stand in solidarity with all victims of these heinous attacks and call for immediate action to protect migrants and minoritised communities from further violence. Peaceful citizens of the UK are forming a collective resistance to protect vulnerable communities like ours and to combat this violence. To date, there are at least 300,000 Filipino migrants in the UK whose lives are at risk due to the ongoing violence. The Philippine Government must ensure its responsibility to its citizens by guaranteeing the safety and protection of our Kababayans, while Filipinos and all of our communities must unite, join forces to protect one another, and campaign to end this kind of violence.
